Don’t Trust Everything You Google: A Costly Lesson in Tech Support Scams

June 30, 20253 min read

What Happened When a Business Owner Googled His Router

We recently got a call from a local business owner who was having issues with his Wi-Fi router — a common issue that should’ve been a simple fix. But instead of reaching out to a trusted local IT provider (like us), or even going straight to the brand’s official website, he did what many people do:

He Googled the name of the router.

The first result on Google looked legit — but it wasn’t. It was a scammer who had cleverly optimized their site to appear above the real brand support page.

The result?

  • The scammer convinced him to pay for "support."

  • Then they installed remote access software on his system.

  • His computer began acting strangely — windows opening on their own, files moving — and when he asked questions, the “technician” got defensive.

That’s when he hung up, shut everything down, and called us.

How We Resolved It

Thankfully, he called before real damage was done. We were able to:

  • Remove the remote access software

  • Audit the system for backdoors or malicious scripts

  • Lock down his machine with stronger security and monitoring

  • Review his passwords, account access, and email logs for signs of breach

But it didn’t have to get that far.

Types of users often targeted by tech support scams

Why This Happens More Often Than You Think

Search engine scammers are smart. They know:

  • People don’t always verify links

  • Brands don’t always rank first in search

  • Many users can’t distinguish between real and fake support

And if you’re busy running your company, Googling “how to fix router” shouldn’t be a gamble — but it is.

This is a growing trend, especially among:

  • Business owners who are used to solving things quickly on their own

  • Office managers who aren't IT pros but try to help

  • Teams who click support links without thinking

How to Avoid Tech Support Scams

Here are 5 quick ways to protect yourself:

✅ 1. Don’t Google Support — Go Straight to the Source

Always type in the official brand URL (e.g., www.netgear.com) or get support through your IT provider.

✅ 2. Never Let Anyone You Don’t Know Take Remote Control

If they offer to “take a quick look” — and you didn’t initiate the relationship — say no.

✅ 3. Install Endpoint Protection

We install and monitor remote access and endpoint tools, so we know what’s on your machine — not strangers.

✅ 4. Educate Your Team

Scammers often target admins or non-technical staff. One short training can prevent thousands in losses.

✅ 5. Have a Nerd You Can Call

When you have a local IT partner like Nerdworks, you don’t have to guess or Google.

Final Thought: Google Isn’t Your IT Guy

Search engines are powerful, but they don’t know what’s best for your network, your security, or your business.

You need someone who does.
